Alastair Reid was a Scottish television and film director, described by The Guardian on his death as "one of Britain's finest directors of television drama". Reid studied at the Edinburgh College of Art and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

During World War I, a British aristocrat, an American entrepreneur, and the latter's attractive young daughter, set out to destroy a German battlecruiser, which is awaiting repairs in an inlet just off Zanzibar.
